There's been an increase in the number of civil weddings here - with 29 percent of ceremonies last year being non - religious.

That's a 26 percent increase since 2007.

However there's been a decrease in the number of marriages taking place since then - after a period of growth between 2000 and 2007.

Meanwhile - There's good news for couples planning to tie the knot al fresco.

The Tanaiste Joan Burton has this afternoon confirmed that it is legal for marriages to be solemnised outdoors - so long as the place is open to the public.

It follows confusion over what constituted a public venue - after a number of couples were told that the Civil Registration Act required them to get married indoors.

Joan Burton says that she has sought the advice from the attorney general and that outdoor weddings are legally permitted.
