Work on the Clery's site in Dublin is to get underway after a deal was reached between workers and the owners of the former department store.

Staff are to get a "significant" goodwill payment as part of the deal.

The 160 year old department store closed in June 2015 with the loss of 460 jobs after Natrium bought it for 29million euro.

The specific details of the agreement are confidential but as well as the goodwill payment there'll also be a provision for fair working conditions for those who join the new Clery's and the creation of a liaison and employment officer who will deal with training and applications.

Priority will be given to former staff members and there will be a process to ensure that the communities of the North East Inner City benefit through training and employment.

As a result of the deal, SIPTU has withdrawn its appeal to the grant of planning permission and construction is expected to get underway in the coming months.

It's expected to take three years to complete and the finished development will employ around 3,000 people.
