Commission predicts no confusion over ballot papers

The Referendum Commission says the public will NOT be confused by the ballot papers for next month's referendums.

The Commission has kicked off its information campaign for the polls on same-sex marriage and the age of presidential candidates, taking place next month.

Despite the ballot papers having the same format as those of 2013 - when there were widespread complaints about the design of the ballot papers and the questions being put - the Commission says there will be no similar issues this time.

That's because the questions being put to voters are not 'a negative' as it was in the case of Seanad abolition - when some people voted Yes to abolish the Seanad, and others voted Yes intending to state that they wanted a Seanad.

A study undertaken by the Referendum Commission, at the time, found that 13% of Yes voters actually intended to vote No - while 6% of No voters had actually intended to vote Yes.

But despite that finding, the Commission now says there will be no issue with the design of the papers.

For the first time, the design of the ballot papers will be included in the booklet being sent to every home - giving voters the chance to familiarise themselves with the papers and to make it clear which box they should tick, depending on their views.

The Commission is also encouraging citizens to make sure they're registered to vote - with May 5th the deadline to get registered for new voters, and April 25th the deadline for others who need to change their details.

Our political correspondent Gavan Reilly reports.
