Conor McGregor has withdrawn from the Presidential Election campaign.

The 37-year-old made the announcement on social media, hours before he was due to make presentations to two local councils in Dublin and Kildare on Monday.

He was due to address local councillors on Dublin City Council and Kildare County Council, in the hopes of getting their backing to appear on next month's ballot.

In his statement on X, the former MMA fighter claims he had enough public support to be elected to Áras an Uachtaráin, but was blocked by an 'outdated Constitution', which has prevented him from getting on the ballot paper.

So far, three candidates are confirmed to appear on the ballot paper for the Presidential election on the 24th of October.

They are; Independent TD for Galway West Catherine Connolly, former Fine Gael minister Heather Humphreys, and former manager of the Dublin senior men's football team, Jim Gavin is Fianna Fail's nomination for President.

Prospective candidates have until 12 noon next Wednesday 24 September to submit their nomination, showing support of 20 TDs or Senators, or the backing of at least four local authorities.

The deadline for voters to register ahead of the election is Tuesday 7 October.
