Cork City Council has begun distributing sandbags to home owners and business people in the city centre in anticipation of serious flooding in the city tonight.
A one metre surge is expected at high tide at 9pm and the council's warning those in low-lying areas to be prepared for flooding.
Cork City Council says the flooding tonight may be worse than that which hit the city centre yesterday morning - when several quays were flooded and businesses in the city centre were also badly hit.
Motorists are urged to avoid the city centre between 8pm and 10pm tonight as cars and other vehicles can cause a backwash of water which can exacerbate flooding on city streets.
And the Council's also asked pedestrians to avoid the city centre as they risk falling into open manholes, drains and shores which may be exposed by flood waters.
