TDs may today be told how much Irish households will be charged for water.

Officials from the energy regulator will appear at the Public Accounts Committee alongside senior staff from Irish Water.

Last night the water provider said it wanted a system where people would be charged a minimum amount, even if they didn't use any water.

Irish Water says it's the same as other utilities - and wants a standing charge to cover the cost of running the water network.

That means customers would face a flat fee for the water service - even if they never turn on a tap.

But that seems to go against the government's previous claims that households would get modest amounts of water for free.

The Public Accounts Committee will today hear from regulators - who'll be asked exactly how much a household might pay, and whether a standing charge is something they'll allow.

Civil servants will also be present - to tell TDs exactly when the government found out about Irish Water's plans to spend 86 million euro on consultants.
