A minute's silence has been held at the Dublin Children's Court for a 16-year-old defendant, who died after collapsing on Dublin's Trinity Street on Monday.

The boy - who was in the care of Tusla the Child and Family Agency - had been staying in hostel accommodation and was due to be sentenced for a robbery and attempted robbery.

His solicitor said that he was a troubled boy and that appropriate intervention came "far too late".

The boy, described in social worker's report as being in a "crisis cycle", had 23 prior criminal convictions and was awaiting trial for other serious offences at the time of his death.

The judge commented on the sadness of the case and called for a minutes silence, after which he struck out the proceedings.
