Independent candidate Gerard Craughwell has won the Seanad by-election.

He defeated Fine Gael's candidate John McNulty on the second count, thanks to transfers from Sinn Féin.

His win means the government can no longer be sure of having a majority in the Seanad.

Senator Craughwell says he hopes the government will now treat the Seanad with respect.
