A cross border inquiry into alleged abuse by IRA members could be on the cards.

It follows weekend reports that the names of suspects against whom claims have been made have been supplied to Gardai.

It follows abuse allegations made by Mairia Cahill, which she claims the IRA covered up.

A spokesman for the government has told the Irish Times that the issue is expected to be discussed at next week's North South Ministerial Council.

Belfast based security correspondent Alan Murray says if the Irish government chooses to hold the inquiry itself, it could be similar to the Smithwick Tribunal:
