Crunch talks will begin this morning to try to end a major conflict with farmers over beef prices.

It's ahead of more protests planned for Sunday across the weekend, if an agreement can't be reached.

A high level meeting will take place today between farmers and factory representatives.

Farmers claim the price paid for their beef is €350 per head lower here, than in the UK.

Last month farmers staged a nationwide 24 hour protest outside meat factories to highlight their anger over beef prices.

Similar action is planned for this weekend, with a 48 hour demonstration due to get underway from Sunday afternoon.

IFA President Eddie Downey has said he expects some progress during today's talks, but thinks it's unlikely there will be full agreement on all issues.
