Cruz and Clinton win votes, but Rubio looks promising

US voters have had their first say on their next potential president.

It was a good night at the Iowa caucuses for Ted Cruz and a disappointment for Donald Trump - but third placed Marco Rubio may well be the Republican candidate to watch going into the New Hampshire primary.

Donald Trump has previously said that second place means nothing - but that's exactly where he finished last night:

 

Republican party members at the Iowa caucus voted Texas senator Ted Cruz into first place and he was in jubilant form:

Hillary Clinton claimed the narrowest of victories in the first proper test of her campaign.

She just edged ahead of Bernie Sanders to become the State's choice of Democratic presidential candidate:

But despite finishing in third place for the Republicans, it's Marco Rubio who is starting to look very presidential:

 

Journalist with the LA Times, Robin Abcarian, says Rubio is the one to watch:

New Hampshire is the next state to vote in a week's time - where polls have Trump ahead by double figures.
