"Apparent deficiencies" have been identified at Galway's Portiuncula Hospital - after two babies died - while five others were deprived of oxygen.

The hospital group says the review relate to seven cases at the hospital in Ballinasloe between February and November of last year.

The hospital group says it's contacting the seven families - and it's satisfied there is no continuing concern for patient safety - with corrective measures already taken.

An independent review will now take place. It's due to report to the Health Minister and HSE within three months.

The Irish Times Health Correspondent Paul Cullen says a number of issues were identified.
