A former delivery man who said he got involved in a €3 million Euro drugs operation to "put food on the table" has been jailed for 12 years.

Aaron Dunne of Mount Eustace, Tyrellstown, Dublin, was caught moving large quantities of cannabis across Dublin on various dates in 2011 and 2012.

A Garda surveillance operation was launched after the multi-million euro cannabis shipment arrived at Dublin Port inside a consignment of meat.

Aaron Dunne was caught red-handed transporting over €85k of the drugs and officers swooped on his refrigerated van after a handover with another man.

The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to various drug dealing offences at North Road, Finglas in May 2011 and Killeen Court, Ballyfermot in March 2012.

He told Gardai he had leased the van and was making legitimate deliveries but got involved in the drugs operation because he was crippled with debt.

He said he was out of work and had credit card, loans and a wedding to pay off.

Judge Mary Ellen Ring handed down a 15 year prison sentence today but suspended the final three years.
