Denis O'Brien and IBRC have won High Court orders against RTE stopping the businessman's confidential arrangements with the bank being published or broadcast.

The details of Mr Justice Donald Binchy's decision can't be reported until his written judgment is redacted of sensitive information next week.

Our Courts Correspondent Francesca Comyn reports:

Reporting restrictions are in place, but it is known that RTE's business editor David Murphy had planned a report for the Six One news focusing on governance at IBRC

It related to the state-owned bank's handling of large debtors, one of whom was Denis O'Brien.

The report also referred to a letter the businessman sent in 2013 to the bank's special liquidator Kieran Wallace about the terms of his loan facilities.

While there was no allegation of wrongdoing against Mr O'Brien, he claimed revelations about his private banking would damage his commercial and banking interests.

Responding to the High Court decision, RTE issued the following statement;

"RTÉ is disappointed by today’s injunction as we feel that the story is in the public interest, but we respect the court’s decision. RTÉ will give further consideration to today’s ruling and RTÉ will continue to report on, and investigate, stories in the public interest."
