The government department responsible for Irish has been slammed for using Google Translate on an official website.

The website to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising had to be changed, with the government's own Irish language watchdog criticising the poor standards.

Rónán Ó Domhnaill says the same attitude would not be displayed to the English language, and that the furore is particularly disappointing given that the website was built by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

Meanwhile the programme for 2016 has also been criticised for not doing enough to honour those who led the Easter Rising itself.

One relatives group is arranging its own commemorations for the Easter Rising, because the official programme of events does not recognise the sacrifice of those who founded the state.

Our political correspondent Gavan Reilly filed this report for Today FM's National Lunchtime News.
