Dáil comments on O'Brien loan can be reported

The Government has issued a statement welcoming the clarification from the High Court on reporting of comments made under Dail privilege about Denis O’Brien.

Judge Donald Binchy said he never intended to restrain TDs from making comments in the Dáil, nor to prevent the reporting of them.

In a statement this evening Mr O'Brien said he fully accepted Dáil privilege. But he said that privilege should not be used by anyone for what he called "denigration of an individual and political advancement."

He claims the material put before the Dáil is wrong.

Speaking on the Last Word, Catherine Murphy said her only motivation is the public interest:

Meanwhile, Former Public Interest Director with IBRC Alan Dukes says every case was dealt with "on its merits" when it came to dealings with customers of the bank.

He told Matt Cooper on the Last Word that the main motivation was always to secure the maximum return for the bank and the taxpayer:
