Sinn Féin is trying to get the Dáil recalled from its summer break to address organ donations.

The party wants TDs to be summoned back to discuss how Ireland has implemented an EU law on organ donor registrations.

The Seanad is being recalled next week for a similar debate, after Fianna Fáil collected enough signatures to trigger a recall.

Now Sinn Féin has started collecting signatures to recall the Dáil to hold a vote on overturning the new rules.

Party health spokesman Caoimhghin Ó Caolain says it's an issue that can't wait until after the summer break.

He says a debate is urgent not only for patients on dialysis, but also those awaiting other procedures like heart and lung transplants.

Both opposition parties say the laws should include the appointment of a specific officer in every hospital who is responsible for overseeing transplants in those facilities.

The chances of a recall are slim, however, because Oireachtas authorities say TDs must sign the petition in person.

Even if every Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin TD came back from holiday to sign, they would be 23 names short.
