Dail row over Creighton's bid to join Technical Group

The Dáil's Technical Group is to write to the Ceann Comhairle, arguing that members of the Reform Alliance should not be allowed to join it.

Lucinda Creighton and three other members of the Reform Alliance have asked to join the group, to get more speaking time in the Dáil.

Under the Dáil's current rules, the membership becomes automatic - meaning Creighton, Peter Mathews, Terence Flanagan and Billy Timmins are all set to become members.

But the rest of the group has concerns about allowing new members - and says that the ex-Fine Gael TDs are actually forbidden from joining it.

The group's whip Catherine Murphy says Dáil rules only allow people to join a technical group if they weren't a member of a full political party when they were elected.

She says if the Technical Group has to expand to accommodate more members, it should also be given more seats on the Dáíl's committees - as it would be a bigger group than either Fianna Fáíl or Sinn Féin.

However she added that the group had no desire to stop TDs from doing their jobs and representing their constituents in the Dáil.

The Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett is being asked to rule on the matter - with Deputy Murphy warning that a legal challenge could be mounted if the previous rules are ignored.

But in a statement this afternoon, the Ceann Comhairle said he had no role in discussions about who would be allowed to join the group.

He said his only role was to make sure that the group did not fall below the minimum number of seven members.
