20,000 homeowners around the country who are under a boil water notice may get a discount on their water bill until the problem is rectified.

Irish Water has today announced a 1.8 billion euro capital investment programme for the next three years.

The focus will be on fixing leaking pipes, ensuring supply in the Dublin area and improving quality.

Irish Water says the number one target is to lift the majority of boil notices by 2015.
