A Fine Gael TD says he wouldn't be happy with Frank Flannery returning as an advisor to the party.

It's reported that the former Rehab CEO and Fine Gael strategist has held meetings with Enda Kenny about returning to the party.

But while ministers say they'd be happy for him to return, backbenchers are not so sure.

Backbencher Anthony Lawlor said Mr Flannery's return would provide another distraction for the party to deal with at a time that it should be communicating a story of financial success.

Both the leaders of Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin say Mr Flannery should not become involved in Fine Gael affairs until he resolves his dispute with the Public Accounts Committee.

Mr Flannery has refused to go before the Committee to answer questions about the spending of public funds at the Rehab Group, of which he was once CEO.

Mr Flannery quit as a Fine Gael advisor last March over that issue, as well as controversy about the extent to which he was being paid by Rehab to lobby on its behalf - while at the same time holding a Fine Gael-issued pass for Government Buildings.
