Dogs Trust Report A 82 Percent Increase In People Giving Up Their Dogs This Year

Dogs Trust says there has been an 82 percent increase in people giving up their pets this year compared to 2020.

The charity says it has received 2,155 surrender requests so far in 2021.

The most common reason for people wanting to get rid of their dog was "behavioral issues".

The charity is appealing to the perspective dog owners to remember a dog is for life and to avoid purchasing from puppy farms.

Especially as people consider purchasing a furry friend for Christmas.

Head of Communications Ciara Byrne says she's "pleading" for people to source dogs ethically.

"We know genuine dog lovers don’t want to fuel this vile trade. It’s not just the puppy that you buy that’s affected, it’s the parents of the puppies that are left behind in often appalling conditions that suffer the most."
