Garda Operation "Slow Down" has caught 322 motorists breaking speed limits.

Those detected included a driver doing more than 70 kilometres per hour over the 50km/h speed limit.

The 24 hour enforcement drive, which ended at 7am, checked the speed of over 176,000 vehicles on roads all over the country.

The operation aims to reduce the number of speed related collisions on our roads.

Gardaí have highlighted a number of serious incidents detected.

They include a driver going at 121 km/h in a 50 km/h zone at Ballynacarrow, Co Sligo - 71 50 km/h over 50 km/h over the limit.

Another motorist was clocked at 140km/h in a 100 km/h on the N4 at Ballinalack in Co Westmeath

And at Cashel in Co Donegal a driver was nearly 50 km/h over the 80 km/h limit.
