Dublin City Council has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a plebiscite to allow Dubliners directly elect their Lord Mayor.
Fifty councillors voted for the motion, one abstained, and one councillor was absent for the vote.
Dublin's remaining three Councils will vote next Monday, with councillors in Fingal expected to oppose the motion.
