The shooting dead of Irishman Michael Dwyer by Bolivian security forces in 2009 will be raised with the country's President this weekend, during his state visit to Ireland.

Evo Morales begins his historic two-day trip today - the first ever official visit to Ireland by a Bolivian Head of State.

It's expected President Morales will come under renewed pressure to launch an independent inquiry into the killing of Michael Dwyer.

Tipperary man Michael Dwyer was shot dead by Bolivian security forces in Santa Cruz on the 16th April, 2009.

The Bolivian government claimed the 24-year-old had been part of an assassination squad conspiring to murder President Evo Morales.

However, the Bolivian public prosecutor who investigated Mr Dwyer's killing said there was no evidence of a conspiracy, or that Michael had any criminal link to the case.

Today, Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan has vowed to raise the case of Michael Dwyer directly with Bolivian President Evo Morales on his official state visit to Ireland.

President Morales will also meet President Micheal D Higgins and will attend an event with the Bolivian community in Ireland.
