The number of people who have contracted Ebola has passed 10 thousand - with almost half of those dying of the virus.

The World Health Organization says in its latest report that only 27 of the cases have occurred outside the three worst-hit countries, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

4,922 people have now died from the deadly disease.

Mali became the latest nation to record a death, a two-year-old girl.

More than 40 people known to have come into contact with her have been quarantined.

Meanwhile health workers who have treated infected patients in the region will face a 21 day quarantine period when they land at JFK and Newark Airports in the United States.

The US President Barack Obama says the response to domestic cases of the disease needs to be based on "facts, not fear."
