The former governor of the Central Bank says better regulation would NOT have avoided the banling collapse.

But John Hurley's told the Banking Inquiry he didn't have the power to regulate banks properly, because of changes introduced by Charlie McCreevy.

Hurley was the governor of the central bank between 2002 and 2009 - but spent much of his evidence at the Banking Inquiry bemoaning how the Central Bank had been stripped of much of its power.

He's also claimed that the ECB ordered that Ireland not to allow Anglo to collapse like Lehman Brothers - in evidence that appears to contradict the claims of the ECB's former president Jean-Claude Trichet.
