Gardai are investigating a fatal house fire in Co Galway which claimed the life of a woman in her eighties.

The fire happened at around 10 o'clock last night in Brierfield near Tuam.

It's understood there were three people in the house at the time.

The body of the woman was removed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where a post mortem will be carried out.

It's believed the two other people were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination.
