MOST OPINION POLLS all show changes within the margin of error - but when multiple polls are looked at, clear trends emerge.

And the trend from the most recent opinion poll is that the Shinner-bashing over the Special Criminal Court is benefitting nobody except Sinn Fein themselves, as their support rises 3 points in a week while Fine Gael's falls by the same amount.

The slide in FG support means the only apparent combination of parties with enough support to govern safely is the unthinkable Fine Gael-Fianna Fáil coalition.

But, as Gavan Reilly examines, there are some peculiar similarities in how the leaders of the two parties are not-quite-ruling each other out.
