IT HAD ALL looked so good for Fine Gael - with three weekend opinion polls putting the party back on an even keel after mid-campaign polls suggested support was on the slide.
But then - in what could have been a victory rally in his home town of Castlebar - the Taoiseach referred to some people, denying the fruits of economic recovery, as "whingers".
Then he defended the remarks, then a cabinet colleague did likewise... then he redefined them, and then he withdrew them altogether.
