Enda Kenny could remain as Taoiseach for the rest of the decade - and potentially get elected for a third term in the year 2021.

That's according to one member of his cabinet, who says the Fine Gael leader will remain Taoiseach for "a long time to come".

Chief whip Paul Kehoe, who is based in Kenny's Department of the Taoiseach, says Kenny could well end up leading Fine Gael into not only the next election, but also the one five years after it.

That would bring him close to age 70 by the time he seeks a potential third term, and make him the country's third-longest-serving Taoiseach after Eamon de Valera and Bertie Ahern.

He would also be Fine Gael's longest-serving leader by that point; he has already led the party for 13 years, exceeded only by Richard Mulcahy who led for 15 years in the 1940s and 1950s.

But another cabinet minister says Kenny's fate as Taoiseach is in the hands of the people, while another has reportedly dismissed the idea of what they're calling "Endless Enda" by suggesting he could run for the Presidency instead.

Our political correspondent Gavan Reilly filed this report for Today FM's National Lunchtime News.
