The highest court in the EU says passengers whose trains are delayed are entitled to partial refunds - even if the delay is caused by extreme weather.

The European Court of Justice has rejected action from an Austrian train company which says it shouldn't have to pay out if trains are delayed because of outside circumstances.

Rules from 2007 require train operators to refund 25 per cent of the ticket price if a train is an hour late, and 50 per cent of the price if it's more than two hours late.

However the rules don't apply to domestic Irish trains for now - and will only kick in for Irish Rail services from December 2014.
