The head of the EU parliament says he is "optimistic" that a multi-billion euro trade deal with Canada can be saved.

After seven years of talks, the deal has been vetoed by the regional parliament of Wallonia in Belgium.

The head of the EU Parliament Martin Schulz held crisis talks with Canada's trade minister Chrystia Freeland this morning.
