Arrest warrant issued for former Ukrainian President

An arrest warrant has been issued for former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.

He was ousted by a vote in parliament on Saturday, after months of protests leading up to violent clashes in Kiev last week which killed around 90 people.

He later fled the city - and reports say he was seen in Crimea yesterday before driving away to an unknown location.

Meanwhile, the EU looks ready to provide financial assistance to Ukraine after the country moved to appoint a pro-Western interim leader to replace President Viktor Yanukovych.

The British chancellor of the Exchequer George Osbourne says the EU should be ready to provide financial aid through organisations like the IMF, amid fears that Ukraine's economy is facing default.

It is very, very early days, early hours, but the people of Ukraine seem to have demonstrated their wish to take their country into the future and to have stronger links with Europe and I don't think we should be repelling that, we should be embracing that," Osborne told reporters in Singapore.

Meanwhile EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will fly to Kiev today for a two-day visit to discuss how to stabilise its economy.

Fears that Ukraine's debt-laden economy is facing default have sparked panic on markets, with bond yields rising sharply and the hryvnia currency losing a tenth of its value in the span of a few weeks.

History professor Robert Service says the Russian President Vladimir Putin should be most concerned about his people getting ideas from the Ukrainian demonstrators:
