The US and EU have announced sanctions on 21 Ukrainian and Russian officials.

Earlier Ukraine's Crimea region announced it's applying to become part of Russia, following yesterday's independence referendum.

Most western leaders including the Irish Government believe the poll was illegal.

The Minister for European Affairs Paschal Donohoe says these 21 people have played a significant role in the crisis.
