An Irish man is reliving the moment he discovered he left the immersion on for seven years.

Keith Doyle who is living in London, realised with the help of a neighbour that his immersion had been on since 2016.

He explained to Dermot and Dave on Today FM how he came to the realisation:

"I'm the same as most of you - I was brought up in mortal fear of leaving the immersion on. It was the worst thing you could ever possibly do.

"We moved into this house seven years ago, I didn't even know we had an immersion.

"There was a switch by the boiler and I thought it was keeping the boiler on. And one of the neighbours was in - and we have one of those smart meters - he said 'your meter is quite high, is your immersion on?'

"I was like 'no, no I don't have an immersion'.

He goes, 'no - we have the same house - you do. It's the switch by the boiler.

"I'm like, 'Oh my god'. I had to quickly run upstairs thinking 30 seconds was going to make a difference after seven years."

He said he believed the hot water was coming from a gas boiler, but did think the water "was quite hot" all of the time.
