Fewer than one in five adults now smoke in Ireland.

It's the first time the number has broken the 20 per cent barrier.

However the Irish Cancer Society is warning that these latest figures from the Health Service Executive mask a high smoking rate amongst people on low incomes.

Semi skilled and unskilled people - and the unemployed account for 30 per cent of the smoking population.

The smoking rate for homeless people was 90 per cent in 2013. 

The ICS is calling for a special targeted effort to be made in disadvantaged communities so that the health divide between rich and poor doesn't widen.
