Support for Fine Gael has fallen to 27 percent - its lowest level of support since Leo Varadkar took over as leader.

That’s according to the Sunday Business Post Red C Poll, which quizzed voters this week as controversy dogged the Tanaiste.

Fianna Fail has almost the same level of support at 26 percent, meaning another minority government would be likely if an election is called in the short term.

Politicians have been repeating the mantra that nobody wants an election, but with that very prospect looming, the parties will be scrutinizing this latest Sunday Business Post/Red C poll to gauge the public mood.

Fine Gael has seen its support drop by two points to 27 percent – in a week in which Frances Fitzgerald’s handling of the Maurice McCabe controversy dominated Dail proceedings.

Fianna Fail is up one point to 26 percent while Sinn Fein, who also tabled a motion of no confidence in the Tanaiste, is up two points to 16 percent.

Independents are down two percent to 10, but the Independent Alliance is stable on 4 percent.

Labour, whose Alan Kelly kicked off the controversy with a series of questions to the Department of Justice, remains stable at 6 percent.

The telephone poll of around 1,000 voters was carried out between last Monday and Thursday.
