A "fireball as bright as the moon" has been spotted moving across the sky above Northern Ireland.

The Irish Astronomical Association says it was reported by member who works at the Met Office in County Antrim this evening.

It's thought it could be a piece of space rock - part of an asteroid - burning up in the Earth's atmosphere.

A number of other people also reported seeing the fireball at around half past 5 this evening.

It was also witnessed as far south as Dublin.

One person tweeted: "Saw beautiful fireball in sky this evening heading east-west (in northerly direction) on Dundrum Rd. ".

If you saw it you can report your sighting to Astronomy Ireland.
