FIVE outgoing junior ministers have been sacked as part of a wide-ranging reassignment of positions.

Fine Gael has dropped Fergus O'Dowd, Ciaran Cannon, Dinny McGinley and John Perry from its team - while Labour has dumped Joe Costello.

Within Fine Gael, Simon Harris has been drafted in to fill Brian Hayes' shoes at the Department of Finance, while Paudie Coffey moves to Environment, while Damien English takes over Sean Sherlock's old role for Innovation and Skills.

Joe McHugh takes over from Donegal colleague Dinny McGinley in Gaeltacht affairs, and Dara Murphy takes over as Minister for EU Affairs.

They're joined by Tom Hayes, who stays as junior agriculture minister; Michael Ring remains as minister for sport; Paul Kehoe remains as chief whip, and Jimmy Deenihan leaves cabinet to become a junior minister for the diaspora.

Within Labour, Joe Costello's sacking makes way for Sean Sherlock to move into the 'aid and trade' job, with three Labour backbenchers stepping up.

Aodhan Ó Riordáin takes an equality role at the Department of Justice, Kevin Humphreys will join Joan Burton at the Department of Social Protection, and Ann Phelan moves into a new role overseeing rural affairs.

Kathleen Lynch remains at the Department of Health, taking over primary care as well as mental health, while Ged Nash becomes a 'super junior' responsible for business.
