The Education Minister is planning for a phased return to school for all students next month.
Minister Norma Foley has set a target date of March 1st with Cabinet.
However, talks with unions and other school stakeholders are still ongoing.
Education Spokesman for the Social Democrats Gary Gannon doesn't believe it's the right approach.
He says "We've all been let down by dates in the past".
Deputy Gannon says the Department of Education would provide more certainty by putting a metric on what level of covid-19 transmission must be reached before schools reopen.
Cabinet also heard that the negotiations on the Leaving Cert are continuing.
Minister Norma Foley is hopeful there an announcement can be made this week.
