A former Fianna Fáil councillor has been jailed for three years for soliciting someone to kill a garda, a Revenue official and an accountant.

Gary O'Flynn of Hayfield Drive, Whitechurch, Co Cork was given a five year sentence with the last two years suspended by Judge Sean O Donnabhain at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

The 39 year old pleaded guilty to the three charges

O'Flynn served on Cork City Council from autumn 2003, when he was co-opted to replace his father, former Fianna Fáil TD, Noel O'Flynn, until he stood down in December 2008

Imposing sentence on O'Flynn, whom the court  heard made no admissions or did not co-operate with investigating garda, Judge O Donnabhain said it was a most serious matter.

"It is incredible the damage, the hurt and the suffering that he has caused these individuals by his actions - that  money was handed out to carry out this is very worrying," he said.

The court heard evidence from psychiatrist, Dr Eugene Morgan that O'Flynn was living in a fantasy world at the time and had since expressed suicidal tendencies.

He also had a narcistic personality which is difficult to change but he had made good progress while receiving treatment in prison where he is currently serving another sentence, he said

O'Flynn was also given a three year concurrent sentence for a series of fraud offences relating his operating as a mortgage advisor when he used false documents to get three mortgages.
