President Michael D Higgins and and the Garda Commissioner will be among those attending the funeral of Garda Kevin Flatley.

The 49-year-old was knocked down and killed by a motorbike on Sunday afternoon while carrying out a speed checkpoint in north Dublin.

Thousands of Garda officers are expected to attend his funeral at St. Peter and Paul's church in Balbriggan on Friday afternoon.

Traffic restrictions will be in place in Balbriggan with the main street closed from midday.

The funeral service will be broadcast live on big screens outside the church, and also on the Garda Facebook page.

The Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Justice Minister will also be in attendance. The PSNI is also sending a representative.

The Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, says Garda Flatley's death represents a reset in our attitudes to road safety.

Garda Flatley had 26 years of service in the force, first serving in Pearse Street in Dublin on the regular unit. He then moved to Blanchardstown and spent most of his career on the Community Policing Unit.

He'd been working in Roads Policing since 2018, based out of Dublin Castle.

Mr Flatley was an avid member of the O'Dwyer's GAA in Balbriggan, where he coached a number of underage teams including his daughter's.

The funeral mass is followed by private burial in Newcastle, Co Dublin.
