Funeral tributes paid to victims of Carrickmines fire

The parish priest of the Travelling People has told the funerals of five victims of the Carrickmines fire that he hopes their deaths bring about new unity between communities.

Willie Lynch, his partner Tara Gilbert, their children 4-year-old Kelsey and 9-year-old Jodie, and Willie's brother Jimmy were all laid to rest in Bray Co Wicklow earlier today.

The funerals of the other five victims who are all members of the Connors family will take place on Thursday.

Fr Derek Farrell of the Parish of the Travelling People says he hopes the outpouring of support from across the country can lead to new understanding between the settled community and travellers.

 

Meanwhile talks about providing a temporary halting site for the survivors are continuing.

The chief executive of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown has been meeting residents of Rockville Drive who oppose the creation of a site beside their estate.

Local Councillor Chris Curran told the Last Word that everyone has a right to acommodation:
