Galway has won the contest to be European Capital of Culture in 2020.

The city beat stiff competition from Limerick and a regional bid by the "Three Sisters" of Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford.
Winning the title means not just prestige, but millions of euro in EU funding to create a year-long culture-fest in 2020 and beyond.
The year will see events taking place throughout Galway City and County in 2020.
Jen Coppinger, who was one of the cultural programmers involved in the bid, has paid tribute to the people of Galway for their part in winning the title:
