The Garda Commissioner is expected to dismiss allegations of rampant abuse of the penalty points system.

Martin Callinan is due to give answers to TDs about alleged corruption within the Gardaí over the management of the system.

The Dáil's Public Accounts Committee is to examine claims from a Garda whistleblower who says some Gardaí are showing contempt for road safety.

Martin Callinan has previously asked the Public Accounts Committee to share the dossier of evidence sent by the Garda whistleblower.

This morning its contents are set to be officially revealed for the first time.

THe whistleblower claims that up to 200 senior gardai regularly quashed penalty points incurred by their families, friends and people with public profiles.

Commissiner Martin Callinan will explain that a sports star - who was accused of speeding five times in one day - was actually someone else with the same name, who had been trying to save their belongings from a flooded house.

But he'll also have to face questions on why some Garda stations cancel more notices than others - and why fines aren't paid for three out of every ten motoring offences.
