The Garda Ombudsman is investigating a serious road crash in Co Cavan yesterday.

The collision - between a car and a motorbike - happened on the Cavan by-pass at around 5pm.

The motorcyclist - a 44-year-old man - was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

GSOC has confirmed that the incident was referred by Gardai for independent investigation because it is reported that the car involved in the collision was being pursued by Gardaí.

An investigation has now begun.
