A toddler is in a critical condition in hospital after falling from a balcony of a hotel in Co Limerick.

The incident happened at around 1pm at the Strand Hotel on the Ennis Road.

The child received medical treatment at the scene and was taken to University Hospital Limerick.

Gardaí say they have preserved the scene.

A spokesperson from the hotel confirmed the incident happened at lunchtime and said their thoughts and prayers are with the injured child's family.
