Gardai will soon be able to use handheld devices to tell is a vehicle is insured.
According to the Irish Independent new system will be linked to a database of uninsured drivers.
The move is an attempt to clamp down on the rise in the numbers taking to the roads without cover - and should ultimately lead to a reduction in premiums for law-abiding drivers.
Insurance companies will provide Gardai with lists of vehicles that don't have cover based on the license plate and the drivers name.
It's estimated that there are around 150,000 uninsured drivers.
