Veteran broadcaster Gay Byrne has revealed that he is undergoing tests for suspected prostate cancer.

The 82-year-old said live on his RTÉ Lyric FM show today that he will "not be with listeners next week" as he will be in hospital for tests.

He said his doctors have discovered what they think could be prostate cancer which may have spread to his lower back.

Gay said he has enjoyed 'the most wonderful robust good health' all his broadcasting life, and that there were many much worse off than him.

He began presenting the Late Late Show in 1962 and currently hosts a Sunday show on Lyric FM.
