A pensioner in Germany's alerted police to what he thought was a Second World War bomb - only for them to find a monster courgette.

Officers believe it was probably thrown into the 81-year-old's back garden in Bretten, near the southwestern city of Karlsruhe.

They did say the 40 centimetre long vegetable "really did look like a bomb".
